Going the distance for cancer research

Sunday, September 28 dawned a dull grey, but by the time the Leadership Sinai team joined the cast of thousands for the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, the clouds had mostly been dispersed by a brisk breeze and some welcome sunshine.

Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation staff Mindy Webber, Frances Bartlett, and Harold Heft walked for cancer research.

The bright weather, loud music and spectators’ enthusiastic cheers raised the already-high spirits of the runners and walkers gathered in Nathan Phillips Square.

The Leadership Sinai goal: to raise money for the All-Star team of cancer researchers at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital.

Among the team members was Sheila Norman, whose previous marathon experience was 15 years ago. Undaunted, Sheila rose to the dual running/fundraising challenge, successfully completing the half-marathon and raising a significant portion of the Mount Sinai total.

“I’d never fundraised on a personal level, and I felt that one way to get strong support was to offer matching and leverage my gift for Leadership Sinai’s cancer research pledge,” says Sheila, partner and portfolio manager for Cranston, Gaskin, O’Reilly & Vernon Investment Counsel.

Her tactic resulted in great success: Sheila raised nearly $26,000.

The Leadership Sinai team generated more than $40,000, which will support the work of six Lunenfeld investigators: Drs. Daniel Durocher, Anne-Claude Gingras, Helen McNeill, Laurence Pelletier, Frank Sicheri and Jeffrey Wrana.

“This walk is a great way to raise funds and awareness,” says Harold Heft, the Foundations’ Vice President, Advancement, and a member of the September 28 walking team.

Pointing out that Mount Sinai ranked among the top five charities that raised the most money, Harold promised that, “Mount Sinai and Leadership Sinai will have an even bigger presence next year!”
