September 19, 2008 - In a major step forward for paediatric care in Ontario, world-renowned neonatologist Dr. Shoo Lee will join Mount Sinai Hospital in the new year as its Paediatrician-in-Chief and head of the neonatology division at the University of Toronto.

Along with the announcement of Dr. Lee’s impending arrival, the Honourable David Caplan, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, was at Mount Sinai to announce a $14.2-million province-wide strategy for reducing paediatric wait times and increasing access to care.

The announcement includes more than $4.1 million to fund six new bassinets — three in Mount Sinai’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and three in the SickKids’ NICU.

“This is all about making sure that parents can rest assured that their kids will get the health care they need more quickly,” said Minister Caplan. “Today’s investment builds on our commitment to strengthen our health-care system by improving access to care and reducing wait times.”

The paediatric strategy to reduce wait times includes increased capacity in Level III nurseries as well as increased funding for paediatric surgeries and improved use of information technology.

“Ontario is providing tremendous vision and leadership in recognizing the importance of maternal and child health to our society,” said Dr. Lee. “I am honoured to participate in this important endeavour and I look forward to helping improve access and quality of care in the province for the benefit of our future generations.”

Mount Sinai Hospital is a recognized leader in the provision of high-risk maternal and neonatal services.

“In order to be the best, it is imperative that we have a vision for success and the announcement of Dr. Lee’s arrival,
along with the provincial paediatric access-to-care strategy, and increased capacity for our NICU and that of SickKids
are crucial parts of fulfilling that vision,” said Joseph Mapa, President and CEO of Mount Sinai Hospital.
