National Bank Financial Group donates $200,000 towards a second high resolution ultrasound to Mount Sinai Hospital

November 9, 2010 ― National Bank Financial Group today announced a new gift to support the purchase of a new medical imaging ultrasound unit for the Lawrence and Frances Bloomberg Centre for Women’s and Infant’s Health at Mount Sinai Hospital. Thanks to the $200,000 commitment from the National Bank Group, Mount Sinai will be able to significantly increase the number of mothers-to-be that can receive their ultrasound using the best ultrasound equipment available anywhere in the world today.

“Many patients seen in our Fetal Medicine Unit would benefit from being examined using this new technology and the addition of a new unit will go a long way to helping us reach that goal,” said Dr. Greg Ryan, Director of the Fetal Medicine Program at Mount Sinai Hospital. “We will be able to see more patients and provide more accurate diagnoses, often allowing for timely critical fetal therapeutic interventions.”

The new unit includes the very latest matrix ultrasound probe technology and the ability to show the baby in a three-dimensional, volumetric space that is not possible with conventional ultrasound equipment. Many patients’ treatment plans can be improved by the additional diagnostic and clinical information provided to the healthcare team.

This new commitment from National Bank Financial Group comes in recognition of Mount Sinai Hospital being a clinical and research centre of excellence for high-risk pregnancies in Canada, and will further the excellent results of their last gift to Mount Sinai in 2006 that supported the purchase of the first of these units.  That first ultrasound machine has proven so valuable that it is in near continuous use, with some 4,500 patients being scanned per year.

“We are extremely grateful to National Bank for their ongoing support of the Lawrence and Frances Bloomberg Centre for Women’s and Infant’s Health, which will allow us to expand our ability to provide the best care possible to expectant mothers,” said Susan Horvath, President, Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation. “Their generous gift will expand our ability to provide leading-edge, comprehensive care for more than 1,600 women facing a high-risk pregnancy.”

“Health is one of our main priorities. National Bank Financial Group has supported the Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation since 1983 and to be able to play a part in the health and well-being of mothers and children is a real source of pride for our 18,000 employees,” said Mr. Louis Vachon, President and Chief Executive Officer, National Bank Financial Group. “For National Bank Financial Group, being a partner of this internationally recognized institution, and contributing to its continued success, is a real privilege.”
