Point, Scan, Donate: Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation the first in GTA to employ Mobio App for secure donations

November 8, 2010 - The Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation has become the first not-for-profit organization in the Greater Toronto Area to offer the Mobio iPhone and Android App as a way for tech-savvy Torontonians to make a donation. Mobio users can simply scan the custom Mount Sinai QR barcode with their smartphone, enter their gift amount and tap “Pay Now” to securely support one of Canada’s pre-eminent patient care, research and academic health science centres.

The Mobio-Mount Sinai match was made in 2009 when Mobio’s Chief Marketing Officer Mark Binns joined the thousands of new parents who welcome children into the world every year at the renowned Frances Bloomberg Centre for Women’s and Infants’ Health. “I was very impressed by Mount Sinai and its people, and because of this, I wanted to use Mobio to help fundraise for the Foundation,” said Binns.

Appropriately, the Foundation’s first Mobio campaign is aimed at new parents like Binns, and their extended families. The Mount Sinai’s custom barcode is displayed on posters and media screens throughout the hospital, in direct mail appeals, and the Foundation’s website and Facebook page to invite patients, their families and friends to use their smartphone to “point, scan and donate.” Donors can also enter the name and birth date of the child they are celebrating.

“When Mobio approached us, we immediately saw that it would have great appeal for our donors,” said Susan Horvath, President, Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation. “It’s incredibly flexible, because the barcode can be scanned from T-shirts, television screens, print items and social media like Facebook and Twitter. It’s environmentally friendly, and it will appeal to a whole new demographic of grateful patients and their families.”

The Mobio App is currently available on iPhone and Android platforms; a BlackBerry App will be launched in mid-December. First-time Mobio users simply download the free Mobio app and register for the service – a process that typically takes less than three minutes. Once registered, a user can then scan a Mobio QR barcode in order to pay for goods or services, or to make a charitable donation. These transactions take about 10 to 15 seconds to complete, from barcode scan to delivery of an email receipt.

“Mount Sinai continually inspires so many donors, and now it has inspired this innovative new way to donate,” says Susan Horvath. “We’re thrilled to be the first hospital in Toronto to offer our donors the Mobio option.”
