Celebrating opening of new NICU, Labour and Delivery, and Antenatal Units

February 24, 2015

Mount Sinai Hospital celebrates the opening of the new Newton Glassman Charitable Foundation Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the Slaight Family Labour and Delivery Unit, and the Am Israel Chai Antenatal Unit – all among the busiest in Canada – on February 24, 2015.

These new, state-of-the-art facilities are built to reflect evolving models of care that offer the best patient outcomes and experiences and are part of the Frances Bloomberg Centre for Women's and Infants' Health, the hospital's largest area of focus.

NEWTON GLASSMAN CHARITABLE FOUNDATION NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

  • As the largest NICU in the GTA, each year Mount Sinai Hospital cares for more than 1,000 premature infants who are less than 35 weeks gestation, many of them weighing less than a kilogram
  • The new Newton Glassman Charitable Foundation NICU features 58 individual patient suites with 62 beds, replacing the existing open concept model; this reflects the latest model of neonatal care where parents’ hands-on involvement is significantly greater than previous models of care
  • The new unit reflects new models of patient and family-centred care, contributing to an exceptional patient environment
  • It also features decentralized care stations allow clinicians to be closer to their patients at all times
  • The new NICU also offers perimeter patient rooms to take advantage of the healing qualities of natural light
  • The facility is designed to provide a soothing, home-like environment to help new parents learn to care for their newborns in a more comfortable environment
