New waiting room gets a child-friendly make-over in time for Mother’s Day

May 7, 2015

Mount Sinai Hospital and Smilezone Foundation staff and board members open the new kid-friendly Smilezone in the Slaight Family Labour & Delivery Unit

Just in time for Mother’s Day, Mount Sinai Hospital, part of Sinai Health System, and Smilezone Foundation welcome patients and families to the newly designed Family Waiting Room in the recently opened Slaight Family Labour and Delivery Unit.

Almost 7,000 babies are born each year at Mount Sinai Hospital, making the Labour and Delivery Unit’s waiting room a busy space, where families await the arrival of their newest members. The transformation of this waiting room, designed and implemented by Smilezone Foundation, includes colourful wall paints; an interactive, sensory-equipped kids table; cartoon murals; and a children’s bench. The new room is designed to “put smiles on children’s faces” by creating a safe, warm environment to provide an escape for children facing long waits in the hospital. The room is available to families of patients from every area of the hospital.

“Our Foundation is honoured to be a part of Mount Sinai Hospital,” said Scott Bachly, Chair and Founding Member of Smilezone Foundation, which is dedicated to assisting children and families who are facing difficult or stressful times and health challenges. “Hospital visits truly affect the entire family, and we’re overjoyed that the children, siblings and families visiting and waiting for their new arrivals have this new Zone to enjoy!”

“On behalf of our patients, I offer our gratitude to the Smilezone Foundation,” said Dr. Mathew Sermer, Obstetrician & Gynaecologist-in-Chief at Mount Sinai Hospital. “These facilities will help us deliver the best experience for patients and their families.”
