Local Health Integration Networks
Our Community Partners
In March 2006, the Ontario health-care system was transformed through legislation that created 14 Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) for the improved planning, funding, integration and delivery of health services.
This was a critical step in the evolution of a health care system that is accessible, co-ordinated and responsive, in addition to being accountable and sustainable.
The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has established LHINs as a means of improving the health-care system in Ontario. Mount Sinai falls under the auspices of the Toronto Central LHIN.
The creation of LHINs has increased the level of accountability and responsibility for all public hospitals, which Mount Sinai supports, as it is a further commitment to the sustainability of our health-care system and its capacity to provide for all patients and their families.
Although LHINs do not provide health services directly, they are responsible for integrating and co-ordinating services in each of their geographical areas at the community level in order to enhance the quality of patient care. The Minister of Health and Long-Term Care will ensure that there are appropriate measures to hold LHINs accountable.
Building on the Best, Mount Sinai’s Strategic Plan to the year 2010, also aligns our interests with those of the LHINs so that we can adapt as seamlessly as possible and thrive in an ever-changing health-care environment.
LHINs play an extremely important role in the present and future delivery of health care services in Ontario. Mount Sinai is committed to working within that system to deliver the best patient and family-centred care.
