You and your surgeon have decided to go ahead with Total Joint Replacement Surgery. Our goal is to help you get back to your home and community as soon as possible after your operation.

The following booklets have been developed to give you general, helpful information regarding what you may experience before and after Total Joint Surgery. They contain information on medications, discharge planning, post-operative exercises and much more.

What to do the night before surgery
- Do not eat or drink anything after 12 midnight the night before your surgery.
- Do not eat or drink anything on the day of your surgery. This also means no water, gum, candy or smoking.
- Remove all nail polish, lipstick and cosmetics before coming to the hospital.
- Leave your jewelry, money, credit cards and any other valuables at home (as we cannot accept responsibility for these items and there is nowhere to lock them up).
- Partial plates, dentures, hearing aids and contact lenses can be worn but must be removed before going to surgery.
- You may want to bring something to read while you are waiting for surgery.
- If you need an interpreter, please arrange to have someone with you the day of your surgery who can speak English.
Where to go the day of your surgery
Go to the Admitting Department first, located on the Main Floor. At this office you will:
- Present your Mount Sinai Hospital card, your Health Card and any insurance policy information that you may have.
- Receive your Mount Sinai Hospital blue card and registration sheet.
- Optional telephone - Pay a flat rate for the telephone in your room (local calls only).
- CELL PHONE use is prohibited in the hospital.
- You will be directed from here to the area of the hospital where you will be prepared for surgery (your family may accompany you).
- Once you arrive at this area you will present your documentation to the unit clerk and your nurse will admit you and prepare you for surgery.
