Young Mothers Prenatal Group
The Young Mothers' Prenatal Program provides teens with professional and peer support and helps instill problem solving and solution identification skills. It was established after nurses in the Women's and Infants' Health Program realized that regular prenatal classes were not meeting the needs of pregnant teens.
The classes teach the basics of care for both mothers and babies, such as preparing for the birth and preparing for life at home. Instructors teach and encourage breastfeeding and women are taught how to prepare formula appropriately. The classes also focus on preventing postpartum depression and domestic violence.
The program exists for our young women who have a lack of knowledge of pregnancy issues and childcare, and who aren't aware of the resources available to them.
Since its inception, a Sistering Program has evolved, where young mothers who have graduated from the prenatal program continue to stay connected by attending classes and mentoring other pregnant teens going through similar experiences.
Our dietician, public health nurse, clinic nurse, two social workers and two obstetricians are here to meet the needs of these young woman. The young mothers involved in our program deliver their babies at Mount Sinai Hospital.
The program is closely linked with the Young Families Program, providing care to adolescent mothers before delivery and after delivery at the Hospital for Sick Children.
