Physiotherapy

Registered physiotherapists provide assessment, treatment, education and consultation to adults with problems related to cardiorespiratory, medical, neurological, oncological and orthopedic conditions incorporating the principles of patient-centered care. The goal is to achieve optimal recovery of function, movement, and maximize a patient's quality of life.

Physiotherapists are governed by a regulating body College of Physiotherapists of Ontario. Their professional association is the Ontario Physiotherapy Association.

Physiotherapy - Inpatients

As part of a multi-disciplinary team, inpatient physiotherapists work with patients from pre-admission through to discharge, providing assessment, treatment, education and consultation. Physiotherapists also assist with discharge planning including referral to home-care physiotherapy services.

Inpatient physiotherapy services include respiratory, medical, orthopedic, post-surgical and neurological care.

How to Access Inpatient Physiotherapy

To refer a patient for physiotherapy, a signed physician's order is required in the chart. Pager numbers for physiotherapists are usually posted on that unit for which they provide service. Alternatively, call the Rehabilitation receptionist at 416-586-4800 ext. 5035 to be connected to the specific therapist for the unit.

Weekend and Holiday Coverage

Inpatient physiotherapy is available on a very limited basis on weekends and statutory holidays for acute cardio respiratory and orthopaedic patients. Patients are placed on the weekend list at the discretion of the regular treating therapist, based on criteria set by the department. Please call locating to reach the Weekend Physiotherapist.

Physiotherapy for MSH employees

The Department of Rehabilitation provides prompt assessment and treatment to staff of Mount Sinai Hospital. Our department works closely with the Occupational Health and Safety Department in assisting with early return to work and pre-injury functional status.

Staff are usually booked for an initial assessment within one to two weeks of receiving a physician's referral. Employees with work related injuries or those employees who are on modified work, should consult with Occupational Health for referral for rehabilitation services. Employees with non-work related injuries need to bring or fax a physician's referral for services to our reception area.

Please visit our MSH staff rehabilitation program page for a description of how to access physiotherapy and rehabilitation services.
