FAQ
Who are we?
The Prenatal Diagnosis and Medical Genetics Program is part of the Special Pregnancy Program. We provide medical genetics and prenatal diagnosis services to the community.
What is our aim?
We aim to simplify genetics information to the community and offer genetic testing and prenatal diagnosis with a complete discussion of the medical, social, ethical and psychological benefits and limitations of such testing.

How long is a typical genetic consultation?
Appointments can range from 1 hour to 4 hours depending on the complexity of the information to be provided and/or the need for further investigations. Please note that the Prenatal Diagnosis and Screening Consultation takes approximately 4 hours.
Who is part of the Prenatal Diagnosis and Medical Genetics team?
The Prenatal Diagnosis and Medical Genetics team is multidisciplinary and is comprised of geneticists, genetic counsellors, obstetricians, radiologists and neonatologists. When other expert opinions are required, our team refers patients to the appropriate services.
How much will this cost me?
Genetic services are offered free of charge to the general population in Ontario as per Ministry of Health Guidelines. All tests offered are covered by OHIP. However, some tests require samples to be sent to other countries (e.g. U.S.A.) as not all tests are available in Canada. In those cases, and with your consent, we send an application to OHIP to cover the expenses.
What if I want a genetic test for which I am not eligible?
If you require services for tests that are not covered by OHIP, we will assist you in finding a centre that will provide such a service. If payment is required, you will be billed directly by the laboratory involved.
