Mount Sinai Hospital is a recognized centre of excellence in both the area of research and clinical care for patients with Type I and Type II Diabetes.

Dr. Barry Simon, provides psychiatric consultation to any patient with diabetes, treated at Mount Sinai Hospital, via referral from their treating physician.

Patients are seen on an out patient basis, and an initial assessment provides the basis for designing a person-specific intervention, utilizing self management strategies to assist with lifestyle adherence, psychological support and psychotropic medication or referral to other treatment providers as required for the needs of the patient or their family.

Once a patient is seen by the psychiatrist in consultation, ongoing liaison between the endocrinologist, the team of diabetic nurse educators and registered dietitians provides a framework for effective ongoing care of each persons unique psychosocial challenges.
