Special Pregnancy Program
Part of the Frances Bloomberg Centre for Women’s and Infants’ Health
The Special Pregnancy Program (SPP) at Mount Sinai Hospital is dedicated to the investigation and management of the full range of maternal, fetal and placental difficulties that may occur during pregnancy.
Mount Sinai’s Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists staff one of the largest MFM units in the world dealing with medical disorders complicating pregnancy. This Unit works with other hospital specialties to care for women with some of the most challenging pregnancies such as those complicated by maternal heart disease, cancer, transplantation, or renal failure.
Our Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists are on call to care for Mount Sinai’s ill mothers and infants as well as to provide consultation to other hospitals in the region and accept regional patients if in-patient management is necessary.

The medical and nursing team began its work in this field using experimental models over three years ago, and is now a referral center for the entire country.

Prevention of Prematurity Program
Prevention of Prematurity Program is engaged in research activity that is aiming to decrease the rate of preterm deliveries. Preterm deliveries are responsible for many serious neonatal illnesses and significant life-long health complications.
About the Special Pregnancy Program Team
The Special Pregnancy Program has a team of obstetricians, nurses, sonographers, geneticists and genetic counsellors specializing in the investigation and management of a complete range of maternal and fetal problems during pregnancy.
Mount Sinai is a leading academic health centre and all of the SPP physicians are on the medical faculty at the University of Toronto. Residents and medical students are an important part of the team and under the supervision of a staff member they rotate through the unit helping care for patients. The team also includes fellows—obstetricians who work to further specialize in areas of high-risk pregnancy.
