Andrea Firmin, Clinical Dietitian

A Bright Mentor in Mount Sinai's Nutrition Program

When preparing to become a dietitian, nothing compares to on-the-job training. Part of my job as a Clinical Dietitian at Mount Sinai is to guide students through this training, and make sure they have a practical and fulfilling experience.

At Mount Sinai – a leading academic institution – we believe in self-directed learning. Students have the opportunity to conduct initial assessments, and follow patients until they leave the Hospital by planning interventions, implementing and evaluating changes in a fast-paced, practical environment.

With my help during their rotations, the interns complete critical journal reviews, small assignments and case studies on top of the patient case load.  They work with other dietitians and the internship coordinator to complete a research project and present their findings to stakeholders. Our program also offers flexible elective options for students who want to try something different.

The students also complete food service rotations to learn how our food is ordered, prepared and served to the patients, and to learn about new products on which they can advise the Department.

These projects bring about critical-thinking and decision-making skills that will guide students through their careers as dietitians.

Another great feature of our internship program is Mount Sinai’s affiliation with Humber River Regional Hospital. The relationship allows students the continuous opportunities of a teaching hospital, combined with diverse experiences at a community hospital. It also exposes students to a wide range of dietetic areas, which helps when making important career choices.

Most importantly, dietetic interns at Mount Sinai learn to prioritize, make educated decisions, and interact with an allied health team to provide appropriate nutritional support and diet education to patients and their families – skills that will follow students throughout their careers.
