Jennifer Sampson, Clinical Dietitian, Preceptor
A Bright Mentor in Mount Sinai's Nutrition Program
The experience of an intern is highly based on the unique hands-on experience they gain with real patients in a practical setting. While University offers students the theoretical knowledge they need to become a dietitian, the internship provides an invaluable opportunity to practice dietetics under the supervision of a Registered Dietitian.
After completing a Bachelor of Science in Psychology at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, I attended Mount Saint Vincent for the Applied Human Nutrition Program.
What I loved about my internship was the opportunity to complete rotations in three distinct areas of dietetics — community, administrative and clinical. As an intern, I had diverse experiences that may not have been possible if I worked in one area alone. The variety also assisted me when making important career choices.
Interns at Mount Sinai have the opportunity to choose electives in specific areas of interest in order to gain the same diverse exposure. Typically, dietetic interns will start by observing their preceptor, and by the end of the rotation they are providing patient care competently, helping deliver the best medicine to Mount Sinai’s patients.
Being a smaller teaching hospital within the Greater Toronto Area, Mount Sinai creates an atmosphere conducive to learning. Interns at Mount Sinai have the chance to learn about the complicated dietetic issues that arise in the real world. They have the opportunity to work with world-renowned professionals in Mount Sinai’s specialized areas such as the NICU, the Women’s and Infants’ Health Centre and the Leadership Sinai Centre for Diabetes. Research and learning at the Hospital are ongoing.
At Mount Sinai, dietetic interns work not only with their preceptor, who teaches and evaluates them, but also with an unbiased mentor who is there to guide, support and advise students as they begin their careers. This allows students to express any concerns they may have, and ask questions about real situations, providing a unique opportunity for knowledge that simply cannot be acquired from reading a textbook.
