A student in Mount Sinai's Nutrition Program

When I graduated from the Applied Human Nutrition program at the University of Guelph, I had gained an abundance of nutritional knowledge and felt prepared to begin my career as a Registered Dietitian.

It wasn’t until I completed my internship at Mount Sinai Hospital that I realized the importance of mentorship, hands-on experience, and learning in a practical hospital environment. Not only did Mount Sinai develop my knowledge of clinical nutrition, it allowed me to apply that knowledge to many different areas of dietetics.

As an intern, I worked on a variety of projects including a presentation for the Ontario Firefighter Association, a Gestational Diabetes lecture for Ryerson students, and a variety of Nutrition Month activities within the Hospital.

My mentors in all of my clinical rotations – including Obstetrics, General Medicine, Diabetes, NICU and Pediatrics, and Outpatient care – ensured that I developed and assessed my own skills. They provided continuous feedback, and challenged me to take initiative and provide the best quality care to real patients.

I also had the opportunity to partner with Campbell’s Company of Canada, Black Creek Community Health Centre and Canadian Living Magazine, which sharpened my communication skills and familiarized me with the business and administration side of dietetics.

I’ve now completed a contract as a Registered Dietitian with Hamilton Public Health Services, where I manage the Healthy Eating Advisory Teams in local high schools. I am also involved in resource development, community presentations, and writing nutrition articles for the Hamilton Spectator.

I also have two other jobs. I provide one-on-one counseling to individuals at the East End Community Health Centre in Toronto, and work for Primacy Inc. based as an In-Store Dietitian at Loblaws in Toronto—the opportunities for Registered Dietitians seem to be endless at the moment.

Every day, in each of these roles, I see how Mount Sinai helped me become a confident, self-starting dietitian who values continuous learning. It truly provided me with the skills, practice and mindset that I need now, and will carry into my future as a Registered Dietitian.
