Roula Tzianetas, Coordinator of Education and Research
A Bright Mentor in Mount Sinai's Nutrition Program
Throughout my studies, I always received tremendous support and advice from my mentors. Now, as the Coordinator of Education and Research at Mount Sinai, it is my job to give future dietitians the same guidance and opportunities.
Dietitians are experts in the art and science of food and nutrition. Mount Sinai provides students with hands-on experience to develop the confidence, independence and problem-solving skills needed in the workplace.
What always inspires me about Mount Sinai is its family-like environment. Because it is a teaching hospital, the entire Mount Sinai family shares a passion for educating students and providing opportunities for the next generation of health care professionals.
I graduated from Ryerson University with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Food and Nutrition, and completed a Master of Science in Human Nutrition at the University of British Columbia. While my education gave me the nutritional knowledge I needed to work as a Registered Dietitian, my opportunity to bridge information to practical skills through an internship program was invaluable.
In my career, my greatest accomplishments have been my Master’s thesis, which explored the experience of adolescents with Type 2 Diabetes, and my research poster presentation at the International Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes Conference in Graz, Austria.
Working with dietetic students, however, is more of a gift than an accomplishment. Training and mentoring interns is about giving back to the community, fostering a cooperative team environment and creating opportunities for tomorrow’s dietitians.
