Hilary Rodrigues, Pharmacist and Structured Practical Experience Program (SPEP) preceptor

A Bright Mentor in the Department of Pharmacy

Mount Sinai is the perfect environment for pharmacy students to see how pharmacists can have a real impact on patient care.

At Mount Sinai, clinical pharmacists work in direct patient care areas giving students the opportunity to interact with patients and other members of the health-care team on a daily basis.

As a pharmacist in orthopaedic surgery, my pharmacy students see patients every day. They perform medication histories, gather information from patients to help solve drug-related problems and assist with discharge planning.

Pharmacists are part of the multidisciplinary health-care teams at Mount Sinai. And for many pharmacy students that means working with staff from different disciplines to answer drug information questions. This interaction gives students a glimpse at what other member of the team contribute to patient care.

Pharmacy students gain skills and insight into the patient experience and health-care system that are invaluable for their future in either a community or hospital practice. The Mount Sinai placement opens the students’ eyes to new roles for pharmacists and career opportunities they may not have known existed.
