Nabeel Syed, Pharmacy Resident

It was Mount Sinai’s exceptional mentors that made the Hospital my top choice to complete my full-year clinical residency in hospital pharmacy.

Many of the preceptors at Mount Sinai were also my lecturers at the University of Toronto and I knew that they were outstanding teachers, progressive leaders, and most importantly, that they were top-notch clinicians.

My rotations so far have included drug distribution, drug information, hospital administration, infectious disease, cardiology, psychiatry, general medicine, and total parenteral nutrition. With each rotation I have had the opportunity to become immersed within a new area of the Hospital, and learn from different preceptors.

I am also very fortunate that the Pharmacy Department at Mount Sinai encourages off-site rotations, to help students develop a feel for other hospitals, and to discover the clinical specialties offered at different institutions. I am quite excited about my opportunity to do an oncology rotation at Sunnybrook Hospital.

Along with the clinical aspects of pharmacy, I have developed practical skills that are important to hospital pharmacy practice. I have an understanding of the intricacies of the drug distribution system and have learned how to optimize the delivery of medications to patients; I have also learned about the administrative aspects of management, like balancing a Hospital’s drug budget; and I have gained exposure to human resource issues and ethical concerns. My team work skills have been honed by working closely with physicians and nurses in the care of my patients.

Finally, I’ve had the opportunity to give presentations in each of my clinical rotations. Improving my leadership, presentation and communication skills has helped me during my residency, and will continue to help me throughout my career as a pharmacist. Whether you are giving a lecture, or speaking with a patient about a sensitive topic, these skills are essential.

One of my favourite things about my residency at Mount Sinai is the confidence I have gained due to such excellent clinical exposure. At the end of each rotation, I am better able to make educated decisions and provide the best care to my patients because of my preceptors’ mentorship and expertise. Learning at Mount Sinai is always supportive and helpful.
