As part of Mount Sinai’s commitment to learning and its affiliation with the University of Toronto, The Department of Pharmacy at Mount Sinai offers a variety of educational placements for students who want to translate their pharmaceutical knowledge into hands-on experience.

The Department of Pharmacy welcomes pharmacy students to volunteer, complete required courses and rotations, and enhance their learning in a practical and encouraging environment.

Pharmacy students work closely with Mount Sinai’s experts—the bright minds and big hearts, who are committed to teaching students how to provide The Best Medicine to patients.

Students also benefit from regular professional activities within the Department, such as regular clinical conferences and educational events.

Placement options

Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy
Mount Sinai Hospital offers afternoon placements to Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy students, who want to gain professional exposure. Approximately 20 students are accepted through the University of Toronto, depending on the availability of preceptors.

Structured Practical Experience Program
In the final year of the University of Toronto’s Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy program, students are required to complete 16 weeks in the Structured Practical Experience Program (SPEP). Mount Sinai accepts six students annually to complete their eight week institutional pharmacy practice, part of the SPEP.

Students have the opportunity to work with pharmacists, focus on patient care, identify, prevent and resolve drug-related problems, and develop care plans. The combination of structured learning activities and ongoing assessment from the Department of Pharmacy’s mentors helps SPEP students make the transition from students to skilled practitioners.

The first rotation is offered in January and February, and the second in March and April. SPEP placements are administrated by the University of Toronto.

Residency Programs
Mount Sinai Hospital accepts two pharmacy residents per year, to complete their one year program. Beginning each July, residents join the Pharmacy Department at Mount Sinai to train as hospital pharmacy practitioners.

Hospital pharmacy residencies in Ontario are coordinated by the Hospital Pharmacy Residency Forum of Ontario (HPRFO) and the University of Toronto using a matching service provided by the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists.

Along with a residency coordinator, and a preceptor for each rotation, residents at Mount Sinai complete a variety of required rotations including:

  • Administration
  • Drug Information
  • Drug Distribution
  • General Medicine
  • Surgery
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Women’s Health/Perinatal

Elective options include Oncology, Psychiatry, Emergency and the ICU.

Residents also have the opportunity to focus on other pharmaceutical areas at outside institutions.

Doctor of Pharmacy Program
Mount Sinai Hospital offers placements to University of Toronto Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) Year 2 students who are completing required rotations. Students have the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills learned in their first year to pharmaceutical care with mentorship from the Department.

Pharmacy Technician
Mount Sinai accepts a number of pharmacy technician students from community colleges to complete field placements, gain clinical experience and translate theoretical knowledge to practical skills under the supervision of a pharmacist technician.

Employment Opportunities for Students
Mount Sinai Hospital hires up to eight summer students, who may also have the opportunity to work in the Department throughout the year.
