International Pediatric Emergency Medicine Elective (IPEME)
IPEME is a four-week summer elective course in Pediatric Emergency Medicine will be offered by the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM), the Hospital for Sick Children and CISEPO, in partnership with the Peter A. Silverman Centre for International Health, Mount Sinai Hospital.
This summer elective brings together Canadian, Israeli, Palestinian and Jordanian medical students using pediatric emergency medicine as a vehicle to build understanding, trust, and cooperation for cross-border programs.

Objectives:
- Provide an introduction to the practice of PEM;
- Educate participating students about Emergency Medical issues affecting children around the world;
- Develop the leadership skills of the participating students to take up leadership roles in their future careers;
- Build a cooperative knowledge network between Canadian, Israeli, Jordanian and Palestinian students.
Elective Format:
As part of the pre-course work, participants will be requested to carry out a small-scale needs assessment project and produce a 2-4 page report on the regional pediatric emergency issues.
This elective will involve in-class small group teaching sessions, hands-on development of practical skills, group projects, and observership opportunities.
The elective will focus on core courses that provide:
- A foundation in common pediatric problems, pediatric emergencies, an introduction to global health issues, and;
- General overview and strategies for working in cross-border health settings, specifically in conflict regions.
During the four weeks, students will be working in teams to identify, plan and develop a small-scale research project on a relevant topic. Participants are expected to organize a presentation to professional colleagues in their institution of origin and will be required to submit a written report on their summer elective within 90 days of their return to their country.
Eligibility Criteria:
The 2009 summer elective program will be open to second year medical students from Canadian medical schools and fourth or fifth year medical students from Israeli, Palestinian and Jordanian medical institutions.
Students will be selected for participation in the project based on their:
- Interest in global health, pediatric emergency medicine and cross-border cooperation
- Proficiency in English (read, written and spoken),
- Academic ability and motivation,
- Commitment to a career in pediatrics or emergency medicine
- Adaptability, commitment to continued academic partnership,
- Experience working in small group environments.
Evaluation & Accreditation:
This is a formal University of Toronto elective. All participants will receive certification of completion at the end of the submission of the final assignment.
Students will be evaluated based on their course participation, needs assessment project report, intervention plan and final presentation.
