Goals

  • To provide an environment for learning and interaction among health care professionals.
  • To provide an evidence based curriculum using current available breastfeeding research. 
  • To provide a learning environment whereby professionals can increase their knowledge and skills in assisting breastfeeding mothers and babies.

This 2-day course covers the essentials of breastfeeding for nursing staff in a maternal newborn setting. This course is taught by IBCLC RNs who are employed by Mount Sinai Hospital. The course is intended for health-care professionals at all levels of competencies.

The course has been recently modified to meet 14 of the 18 hours required for education as MSH moves toward BFI designation. Through in-class discussion, case study assignments, and clinical observation the participants will learn how to provide support to breastfeeding mothers and babies with a variety of common and complex challenges.

Course content includes: Promotion and Socio-political Issues in Breastfeeding, Anatomy and Physiology of Lactation, Maternal and Newborn Factors, Breastfeeding in the First 48 hours, Early and Late Breastfeeding Challenges, Hyperbilirubinemia and Hypoglycemia in the Newborn, Supplementation, Pumping and more.

Total Continuing Education Credits for this course is 14 hours for class time plus 4 hours for clinical = 18 hours.
  

Learning Objectives

After participating in this course, it is expected that the participants will be able to:

  1. List the "Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding" and identify how using these steps can assist health-care professionals to support the mother and baby in breastfeeding;
  2. Identify sociocultural and political issues that may influence breastfeeding and be able to develop at least one strategy to strengthen breastfeeding support;
  3. Assess, assist, counsel and teach a mother and baby to correctly position and latch at the breast;
  4. Assess, assist, counsel, and teach a mother and baby who are physically challenged in breastfeeding;
  5. Identify common difficulties experienced by new breastfeeding moms and offer solutions to those problems.

In order to receive a certificate of attendance and grade mark, participants must attend all classes and participate in all three components of the course. Clinical observation must be completed within five weeks of the end of the course.
