Surgical Skills Centre
The University of Toronto Surgical Skills Centre (SSC) at Mount Sinai Hospital provides a laboratory setting where basic and complex surgical procedures can be learned and practiced.
Traditionally, surgical skills were acquired in the operating room. This is no longer ideal due to the complexity of surgical procedures and the pressure of increasing wait times.
In a laboratory setting with state-of-the-art equipment, the SSC has programs for students and trainees.
- SSC provides surgical residents and medical undergraduates with hands-on training to hone their surgical skills.
- SSC also has co-operative work placements for students from high schools and universities including Bishop Allen Academy.
Students start training on their first day learning about the safety procedures, instrumentation and lab set-ups. The students work under a direct supervisor and are part of the team.
The Surgical Skills Centre is also the site of educational research into skills acquisition and evaluation. This research helps provide answers to fundamental educational issues and allows for the testing of surgical innovations.
