Clinical Extern Program

The Clinical Extern Program at Mount Sinai Hospital is one more way we demonstrate our commitment to a rich and meaningful student experience and to excellence in our nursing staff.

This innovative program identifies and recruits top nursing students in their next to final year of undergraduate studies, and furnishes them with important opportunities to apply their knowledge and training and to develop effective working and relationship skills in a clinical practice setting.

As a participant, you will receive a full-time salary during the summer before your final year of undergraduate education to work under the direct/indirect supervision of a registered nurse, and in collaboration with other members of the health-care team.

You will also:

  • receive a General Hospital and General Nursing orientation;
  • observe and assist with direct and indirect patient care;
  • be assigned a preceptor on the clinical unit;
  • meet with the Nursing Unit Administrator, preceptor and Nurse Clinician or Clinical Nurse Specialist to clarify expectations and performance criteria;
  • complete an initial self-assessment and learning/working plan with your preceptor based on your experience and self assessment data, and within the unit requirements;
  • complete a final evaluation at the end of the clinical student experience and be provided with feedback.

The Clinical Extern program is an outstanding opportunity to build your skills and enhance your nursing practice, and is an invaluable step to becoming a part of the exceptional nursing staff at MSH.

Applications for Summer Clinical Extern positions are accepted from February to May each year. If you’re interested in applying, check the Nursing Careers page for postings.

Please specify your interest in the Medical, Surgical or Women’s and Infants’ Health Programs.
