Joseph Mapa President and CEO of Mount Sinai Hospital welcoming new Hospital and Foundation Board Chairs

AGM 2012

Brent Belzberg, Jay Hennick, Lawrence Bloomberg and Joseph Mapa at the Joint Annual General Meeting for the Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation

I am pleased to share with you that yesterday at our Annual General Meeting, Jay S. Hennick was appointed Chair of the Board. Jay succeeds Lawrence S. Bloomberg, who has served as Chair for the past 10 years.

Jay has been a passionate and committed champion of Mount Sinai for many years.  He has been a member of Mount Sinai Hospital’s Board since 1998 and his leadership roles include chairing the Board’s Quality Committee from 2004 to 2006, the Resources Committee from 2006 to 2010 and serving as Vice-Chair of the Board since 2010.  He was also Co-Chair of the Mount Sinai Foundation Board from 2010-2012, furthering the philanthropic goals of the organization. Originally a lawyer, Jay founded and is currently CEO of FirstService Corporation, a global leader in the real estate services sector.  He has been recognized with Ontario’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Consumer Services and was named Canada’s CEO of the Year by Canadian Business Magazine. In 2011, Jay accepted an honorary Doctorate of Laws from York University.  As we enter an unprecedented era of growth and renewal, we will move forward with continued confidence under Jay’s leadership and strategic guidance.

I am also pleased to announce the appointment of Brent S. Belzberg to the position of Chair of the Board of Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation. Brent is an accomplished business leader. He founded and serves as Senior Managing Partner of Torquest Partners, a private equity firm and serves on a broad range of corporate boards, including CIBC. Brent is also a philanthropic visionary who has been involved with Mount Sinai for many years, including serving on the Hospital’s Board of Directors since 2001 and Co-Chairing the Foundation Board since 2010. Brent's strong strategic skills and entrepreneurial spirit will propel the Foundation to new heights.

On behalf of the entire Mount Sinai community, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Lawrence for his exceptional leadership as Chair. I have been privileged to work closely with Lawrence over the past 10 years.  Our Hospital has been forever changed by his significant contributions, including the development of six new floors and laying the groundwork for one of the most ambitious capital development projects in our history. I have been inspired by Lawrence’s vision and determination to secure Mount Sinai’s place as one of North America’s pre-eminent health science centres.

Please join me in congratulating Jay and Brent and thanking Lawrence for his ongoing service.

Yours very truly,

Joseph Mapa
