Mount Sinai Hospital awarded Exemplary status from Accreditation Canada

Mount Sinai has joined a small but prestigious group of hospitals in the country, receiving the highest level of achievement in our accreditation evaluation. We can proudly announce that Accreditation Canada has awarded the Hospital Exemplary status. The Centre for Fertility and Reproductive Health at Mount Sinai was surveyed separately from the Hospital and also received Exemplary status. Exemplary status is the highest ranking awarded, only given to those hospitals with 100% compliance with patient safety standards.

What does this mean? It means we are recognized as among the very best in Canada in delivering outstanding care to our patients.

Accreditation is part of a national external peer review process, designed to promote excellence in quality and safety of patient care. It is an important process for the hospital, as it gives us an opportunity to assess our care against rigorous standards, and to see what we do well and how we can continue to deliver better patient care.

“This distinguished ranking reinforces our position as leaders in the health care sector,” said Joseph Mapa, President and CEO of Mount Sinai Hospital. “Our Accreditation result is a testament to the extraordinary effort by talented staff and clinicians, an engaged board of directors and a leadership team dedicated to delivering excellence in health care.”

Five surveyors spent three days at the Hospital, visiting virtually every area of the building, from patient-care units and our Emergency Department, to housekeeping and food services. The surveyors asked staff many questions about the Hospital - how they do their jobs, what policies and processes are in place, and how that impacts their day-to-day jobs. But the surveyors didn’t stop there; they also asked patients, families and volunteers about their experiences with the Hospital.

The surveyors praised every area of the Hospital, from the Emergency Department to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, noting our connection to the Hospital’s strategic plan and shared values. No endorsement could have been louder, however, than from the lead surveyor.

“Any one of us would be proud to have any one of you care for our loved ones,” said the lead surveyor. “This is an organization that will be a leader well into the future,” he added.

For Dawn Emmerson, an RN in the Pre-Admission Unit, the accreditation buoyed the spirits for the entire unit.

“The surveyor was engaging and seemed very impressed as the nurses on the unit shared their enthusiasm for their work,” said Emmerson. “I think this acknowledgement from Accreditation Canada is validating for our entire team, especially as we continue to work hard to improve the quality of care for all of our patients,” she added. The Pre-Admission Unit was one of the many areas in the Hospital to receive rave reviews, with surveyors identifying the unit’s Standardization of Pre-Operative Testing initiative as a leading practice.
