Areas of Transformation

Through Renew Sinai, we will transform facilities needed by patients battling cancer, undergoing life-saving surgery, requiring emergency care, and so much more.

SCHWARTZ/REISMAN EMERGENCY CENTRE

One second could mean the difference in saving a life, so having an innovative emergency room design and state-of-the art technology for our clinical teams to make decisions more quickly is absolutely critical.

The Schwartz/Reisman Emergency Centre serves as Mount Sinai’s 24/7 front door, 365 days a year. Originally built to treat 35,000 patients annually, we now care for twice that number.

The expansion and redesign of our emergency centre will create a modern space to accommodate more than 80,000 patients a year. This will allow us to continue to deliver safe, high-quality care, evolve with our growing community and effectively respond to our patients’ urgent needs.

Our new emergency centre will:

  • Double in size to 24,000 square feet
  • Increase from 37 to 52 treatment bays
  • Include advanced X-ray and CT scanners all in one location for patient and staff convenience
  • Improve patient flow and communication through its innovative design
  • Deliver specialized services to older patients, a quickly growing patient group

AMBULATORY CARE

Navigating around Mount Sinai’s 20 floors to find a lab or doctor’s office is overwhelming enough without the worry of health issues.

With 381,000 outpatient visits to Mount Sinai each year, it’s imperative that our new Ambulatory Care area enhances our patient experiences and the health of those with limited mobility and cognitive impairment.

Providing more streamlined care for thousands of patients annually, our new Ambulatory Care area will:

  • Be a multi-functional space where patients get one-stop access for lab tests, appointments with doctors and follow-ups
  • Concentrate the delivery of more services in one space, conveniently located just one floor above ground level at the top of our main lobby escalators
  • Feature accessible design features such as low registration desks, non-slip flooring and clear wayfinding signage to make life easier for our patients

Too often, hospitals haven’t been designed around the needs of patients and families. Renew Sinai, including the redesign of our main Ambulatory Care area, changes that.

INFRASTRUCTURE UPGRADES

As we transform our clinical spaces, we are also upgrading several systems and our hospital infrastructure. Among many enhancements, we are incorporating illuminated glass windows into the building design and modernizing our elevators.

Our infrastructure improvements will offer:

  • Modern, energy-efficient exterior glass panels for outside views and more natural light to enhance patient well-being and enable a more visually appealing experience
  • Improved illumination on the building façade to help with wayfinding and to act as a beacon for those accessing the Emergency Department
  • Refurbished elevators for faster travel time, a smoother journey and increased reliability and accessibility
