Meet the Hospital Medicine team

Dr. Soong is an Associate Professor with appointments in the Division of Hospital Medicine at the Department of Family and Community, the Division of General Internal Medicine at the Department of Medicine, and the Institute of Health Policy Management and Evaluation (IHPME) at the University of Toronto. She is the inaugural Division Head of the Division of Hospital Medicine at Sinai Health as well as at the Department of Family and Community Medicine.

Dr. Soong completed her medical degree at Western University, family medicine residency at the University of Toronto, and a Master’s degree in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety at the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation. She is the Medical Director of Quality and Safety at Sinai Health and the Implementation Lead at Choosing Wisely Canada. Dr. Soong is an Associate Editor at BMJ Quality and Safety and a faculty in the Master’s Concentration in Quality and Patient Safety at IHPME. Her research and academic interests include quality improvement, high-value care, novel models of inpatient care, and transitions of care.

Dr. Hedieh Molla Ghanbari, is the Mount Sinai Hospital Medicine Site Director and Site Lead for the UHN / Sinai Health Hospital Medicine Fellowship Training Program. She has been an academic hospitalist since completing Hospital Medicine Fellowship Training at the University of Toronto in 2014. She has completed a Master of Science in Community Health in Health Practitioner Teacher Education from the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto and a Certificate in Quality and Patient Safety. She holds a position of Lecturer within the Department of Family and Community Medicine. She holds a Physician Leadership Institute Certificate and a certificate in Addiction Medicine. She served as Co-Lead for the Systemic Bias and Racism Community of Interest at Mount Sinai Hospital.

She is interested in women in leadership, health equity, and addiction medicine. Her research interests include transitions of care, quality improvement and patient safety.

Dr. Pelc is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Toronto, where he completed his medical degree, residency and fellowship training, as well as a Master of Science in chemical physics. Dr. Pelc is the Hospital Medicine Site Director for Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital, where he has helped facilitate a significant expansion of the clinical and academic output of the Hospital Medicine program.

Dr. Pelc provides care to inpatients in both acute and post-acute campuses at Sinai Health. He supervises medical learners at both sites and is also involved in formal educational activities such as small group facilitation, elective design and grand rounds development. Dr. Pelc’s academic interest is medical and psychosocial comorbidity. He employs both quality improvement methodology and narrative and ethical inquiry in his academic work. Projects have included optimization of medical evaluations during psychiatric presentations, improving care for inpatients with brain injuries and dementia, and exploring end-of-life ethical issues in palliative care.

Dr. Dina Reiss earned her medical degree at Chicago Medical School, Chicago, Illinois and completed her residency in General Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. She completed a Fellowship in Endocrinology & Metabolism at the University of Toronto. Dr. Reiss is currently an Assistant Professor in the Division of Endocrinology at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Reiss specializes in diabetes, obesity and thyroid disease management. She also has a keen interest in General Internal Medicine and Hospital Medicine. She works both in the inpatient setting as well as outpatient clinics, in which she provides care to patients living with diabetes and general endocrine conditions. While working as a hospitalist, she is interested in providing patient-centred care in order to promote positive patient outcomes. She is a firm believer that collaboration is the key to improving health outcomes. She enjoys working closely with patients and inter-professionally with other health care team members to optimize care.

Dr. Reiss is a clinician teacher in the Department of Medicine. In her role as Hennick Bridgepoint’s Education Lead for the Division of Hospital Medicine, she has expanded the hospital’s educational footprint. Specifically, she has created novel educational rounds (including the inaugural Hennick Bridgepoint Inter-professional Grand Rounds), a joint MD-RN inter-professional educational pilot and has also increased learner volumes. Additionally, she has a passion for teaching and is the ICE (Integrated Clinical Experience) / Clinical Skills Lead Tutor and Site Coordinator at Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital.
