Preventative Headache Treatments

Preventive medicines are taken once or more per day, whether the headache is present or not. Taking these medicines on a regular schedule is critical to their effectiveness.

Generally, preventive medications offer the most help to those with the more significant headache patterns. Not only are the headaches prevented but so are the accompanying symptoms, such as nausea and vomiting.  Reducing the need for medication during headache attacks lessens the potential for side effects from these medicines.

Preventive medications are not habit-forming. However, medicine taken to alleviate headaches after onset may be habit-forming. As well, these medicines could possibly intensify the pain of headache as their effectiveness wears off.

Be sure to discuss all medicines and treatments with your doctor.
