Prenatal Classes

All classes are now available as real time, online sessions and registration is open. You will receive an email a few days prior to class with a Zoom link and resource materials. For further information contact the office at 416-586-4800 ext. 2307.

young couple expecting a babyThe Prenatal Education Program at Mount Sinai Hospital offers a variety of prenatal and parenting classes to meet your needs. All of our classes are taught by experienced health-care professionals.

Please book your classes early in your second trimester as they fill up quickly. Plan to take your prenatal classes between 28 and 37 weeks, except for our multiples class  which should be started between 24 and 29 weeks. The Preparing for Parenthood course can be taken anytime before you reach 37 weeks.

All of our classes are offered at our downtown location however the Preparing for Childbirth  classes are also offered at Sherman Health and Wellness Centre in Vaughan.

Cancellation Policy

Due to the high number of registrations, we will not be able to accommodate rescheduling of class date once course registration and payment is complete.

Cancellations received more than 10 business days prior to the start of the class will receive a course refund, minus a non-refundable $30.00 administration fee. No refund will be issued if a cancellation is received 10 business days or less prior to the start of class.

In this 3-hour class, a registered nurse will review important topics including: nutrition, exercise, pregnancy changes, common discomforts, environmental awareness and medical tests/procedures. The session will provide the latest research-based recommendations for a healthy pregnancy as you start this amazing journey to parenthood.

Becoming a parent is a life-changing event and life as a new parent is usually experienced with “in the moment and on the job” training. Our Preparing for Parenthood  program is dedicated to individuals and couples considering starting a family or who have just discovered they are pregnant. It is also open to those further along in their pregnancy. Preparing for Parenthood incorporates evidenced based information and “small group learning” to assist in laying down a concrete foundation to assist parents-to-be in navigating the unknowns of parenting a child in today’s world.

When:    Weekday evenings, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., 4 classes
Fee: $225 per individual or couple; Partners do not need to register separately.

Our popular Prenatal Series is recommended for expectant families to attend early in their 3rd trimester. This series is offered in two different formats: four weekly evening sessions or two full-day weekend workshops. The class content is the same for both. A tour of the hospital is included at the downtown location only.

When:    Weekly: Monday, Tuesday,Wednesday or Thursday evenings, 4 classes from
6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Weekend: Saturday and Sunday in one weekend, 2 consectutive Saturdays or 2 consecutive Sundays, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

This program is designed to meet the special needs of parents expecting a multiple birth. The format is similar to the regular prenatal series but is one week longer and focuses on issues specific to parents of multiples. A tour of the hospital is included. When:     Weekday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., 5 classes
Fee: $250; 1 support person included. Partners do not need to register separately.

This class is intended for women and their partners who have participated in full prenatal classes with a previous pregnancy and are looking for an update. Topics include a review of the labour and birth process, comfort measures, pain management, medical interventions and preparing the sibling(s). Partners are encouraged to attend. Hospital tour is not included.

When:     Once a month, 3 hours in duration, 1 class
Fee: $60; 1 support person included. Partners do not need to register separately.

If you would like to focus on relaxation and comfort techniques for labour and birth, then this class is for you. We will expand on relaxation concepts taught in our Prenatal Series, and provide valuable information for labouring women and their support persons to help them through the entire birth process.

Taught by certified instructors from Link-to-Life Seminars™ Ltd. This popular 3-hour program focuses on skills needed to prevent, recognize, and manage choking, seizures and cardiac emergencies in infants and children. Adult CPR is also covered.

When: Weekday evening, 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Weekend 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Division of Obstetric Anaesthesia offers Meet the Anaesthesiologist evenings. Information is provided on labour and delivery and post-partum pain management options. The program also includes a question-and-answer session.

When: Once every 2 months
Fee: $20, includes a support person

This class is designed for all expectant mothers who plan to breastfeed and is a must for those who have not attended any prenatal class. It is also a good review for those with experience and for those who have had attended our full prenatal series. A lactation consultant will discuss practical information on breastfeeding, pumping and milk supply, along with information on nutrition and medication while breastfeeding. Partners are welcome to attend.

When: Alternate Thursdays mornings, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Learn about introducing your baby to solid foods in this 3 hour class led by a Registered Nurse. Topics include: when to introduce your baby to solid foods, what foods to offer your baby, how to create a positive feeding relationship, and how to make your own baby food. Discussions about continued breastfeeding, weaning and transitions when going back to work will complete the picture of feeding your baby beyond six months.

Although common, pelvic floor concerns do not have to be suffered in silence. Many expectant women are nervous about returning to fitness and resuming sexual intercourse after childbirth. Do you worry about leaking with coughing, jumping or sneezing? Even low back, hip and tailbone pain can result if pelvic floor muscles are too tight and/or weak, lack endurance or have difficulty coordinating with other muscle groups.

Led by a physiotherapist with additional training in pelvic health, this interactive workshop will empower you with knowledge and skills to take control of your pelvic health both during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Partners will also benefit from this workshop and are encouraged to attend.

When: Once a month, on Wednesday evenings 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Fee: $60 includes partner or support person

The 3-hour program will be taught by an experienced health care professional with certification as a First Aid/CPR instructor. This virtual workshop covers current recommendations for infant/child CPR, choking, managing common emergencies, first aid and home safety. Small class size allows for interaction and individual demonstration of technique.

A 3-hour session to prepare "expectant" grandparents or other family/friends who will be supporting new parents and assisting with baby care in the early months. Learn about the latest research and recommendations for baby care.

The group will also discuss the unique and important role of grandparenting within a new family. Topics include: newborn behaviours, brain development, current feeding recommendations, safe sleep guidelines, car seats, environmental safety and more.

When: Weekday evenings 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

A Mount Sinai volunteer will provide a hospital tour for expectant parents. The group will walk through the birth and postpartum units. Information will be provided about the facilities, patient services and hospital policies (excluding questions related to medical care).

** Note: we cannot guarantee that patient rooms will be available for viewing**.
