Joan Barr

GP Psychotherapy

Dr. Barr was trained in experiential psychotherapy in Gestalt method.  She is currently providing individual psychotherapy to patients with depression, anxiety, childhood abuse, spousal abuse and marital difficulties, medical conditions, patients with PTSD and occasionally she treats Eating Disordered patients.   She provides short term and long term intensive therapy.  She has been providing psychotherapy in family practice since 1980. She is a Mentor Member of the GP Psychotherapy Association (GPPA).  As Chair of the Education Committee of the GP Psychotherapy Association (GPPA), she spearheaded the development of the current program:  Basic Skills Core Curriculum - a 7 weekend seminar series for teaching family physicians basic skills in psychotherapy provision. 

She was a Mentor in the OCFP initiative, the Collaborative Mental Health Network in 2001-2.  She has also initiated the development of the GPPA Supervisor Training program.  She is a Courtesy Staff member, Family and Community Medicine, at Sunnybrook and also the New Women's College Hospital, Toronto.  In 2005, she completed the University of Toronto Masters of Education (M Ed.) Program,.  Department of Theory and Policy Studies, Higher Education, Health Professional Stream.  She is particularly interested in Transformative and Experiential Learning, Communication, and use of Language and Narrative in healing.
