Therapeutic Writing Workshop

A one-day workshop on reflective writing to help patients living with chronic physical and mental illnesses

Faculty: Allan Peterkin MD; Rex Kay MD; Julie Hann OT

Friday November 19, 2010

We are the stories we tell.  A growing literature shows that writing out - and talking about - personal stories can help patients living with chronic physical and mental illnesses.  The Mount Sinai Hospital has been at the forefront of developing the theory and application of Narrative Competency Therapy.  Join three skilled therapists - with over ten years experience each - and learn how these techniques can be incorporated into your group and individual work.  This seminar will incorporate theoretical, practical and experiential components to explore the use of narrative-based therapy and therapeutic writing in everyday treatment.

At the conclusion of this one day course, participants will be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate the therapeutic value of narrative theory and its scientific evidence.
  2. Use narrative competency techniques with individuals and groups in clinical practice.
  3. Develop greater attunement to narrative aspects of experience that emerge in all therapeutic work.
  4. Improve understanding of theoretical underpinning of narrative competency therapy.
  5. Know key techniques involved in using therapeutic writing.
  6. Improve knowledge of the literature and clinical rationale for therapeutic writing.

Suitable for supervisory faculty, psychiatrists, GP-psychotherapists, psychologists, social workers, nurses.

Accreditation will be sought.

The cost for the one day workshop is $195.
