Pre-Admission Unit

The Pre-Admission Unit is designed to prepare you for your surgery before you are admitted to the hospital, and is staffed by nurses who will co-ordinate your care and tell you what you need to know about your hospital stay.

You will be in the clinic for two to three hours.

Please note that if you do not come, your surgery will be cancelled. The tests requested by your doctor must be completed before your admission to the hospital.

  • Hospital registration
  • Blood and urine specimen collection
  • History and physical examination
  • Anesthetic review
  • A nursing interview which will include how to prepare for your surgery.

It may also include:

  • X-rays
  • an ECG (Cardiogram)
  • Other tests ordered by your doctor or anesthetist
  • Consultation with other health care professionals besides the nursing staff such as the anaesthesiologist, pharmacist, social worker, etc.
  • All of your medications with the original bottles. Please include any vitamin or herbal supplements.
  • The name, address and phone number of your family physician.
  • A translator, if you need one.
  • The name, address and phone number of any additional medical specialists you are seeing such as cardiologists, nephrologists, respirologists, etc. Please request copies of any recent tests and a consult letter from the medical specialist(s) to present at your appointment.
  • Your provincial health card (O.H.I.P.)
  • If you have additional health insurance, please bring your policy information.
  • A completed pre-admission questionnaire and pre-operative health questionnaire and other documents your surgeon may have given you.
  • If you are not fluent or uncomfortable in English, please have a friend or family member join you to translate. We will be asking you questions about your health and providing you with information about your surgery and recovery.
