Premature Ovarian Insufficiency Clinic

The Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI) Clinic is a specialized interdisciplinary clinic, caring for women under the age of 40 who have experienced premature menopause (last menstrual period). The POI Clinic is currently the only clinic of its kind in Canada.

Why Would You or Your Care Team Be Interested in this Clinic?

POI is caused by depletion of eggs in the ovary and the cells around them. This condition may result in symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, problems sleeping, decreased sexual desire, vaginal dryness, and/or difficulty getting pregnant.

If you haven’t had a period for more than 3-4 months and you are under the age of 40, you should contact your primary care physician. He/she may conduct bloodwork, including pregnancy tests and special hormone tests. If the results indicate concern about your ovarian function, you could be a candidate for this clinic.

The POI Clinic has five primary aims:

  1. Find the possible cause and verify the diagnosis
  2. Provide symptomatic relief
  3. Formulate long-term treatments to prevent future health problems
  4. Counsel and refer about fertility
  5. Research
