As part of Mount Sinai’s commitment to learning and its affiliation with the University of Toronto, The Department of Pharmacy at Mount Sinai offers a variety of educational placements for students who want to translate their pharmaceutical knowledge into hands-on experience.
The Department of Pharmacy welcomes pharmacy students to volunteer, complete required courses and rotations, and enhance their learning in a practical and encouraging environment.
Pharmacy students work closely with Mount Sinai’s experts—the bright minds and big hearts, who are committed to teaching students how to provide The Best Medicine to patients.
Students also benefit from regular professional activities within the Department, such as regular clinical conferences and educational events.
Placement options
Baccalaureate and Doctor of Pharmacy Programs
Early Practice Experience (EPE) and Advanced Practice Pharmacy Experience (APPE) rotations: EPE and APPE rotations are available to pharmacy students. These rotations allow students to develop and enhance their patient care and clinical problem solving skills. Early experience rotations focus on developing foundational skills in hospital pharmacy practice (such as patient interviewing skills) while advanced rotations assist students in their transitions from pharmacy learner to skilled practitioner.
Co-op placements: The Department of Pharmacy Services offers two co-op placements to University of Waterloo pharmacy students each academic term. Students are placed in the Intensive Care Unit and the Emergency Department where they support operational and patient care needs
Post Graduate Training- Hospital Pharmacy Residency Program
Mount Sinai Hospital accepts two pharmacy residents per year, to complete their one year program. Beginning each September, residents join the Department of Pharmacy Services at Mount Sinai to train as hospital pharmacy practitioners. Hospital pharmacy residencies in Ontario are coordinated by the Hospital Pharmacy Residency Forum of Ontario (HPRFO) and the University of Toronto using a matching service provided by the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists. Along with a residency coordinator, and a preceptor for each rotation, residents at Mount Sinai complete a variety of required rotations including:
- Administration
- Drug Information
- Drug Distribution
- General Medicine
- Surgery
- Infectious Diseases or Cardiology
- Women’s Health/Perinatal
Elective options include Oncology, Psychiatry, Acute Pain Service, Emergency and the ICU.
Pharmacy Technician Programs
Mount Sinai accepts a number of pharmacy technician students from community colleges to complete field placements, gain clinical experience and translate theoretical knowledge to practical skills under the supervision of a pharmacist technician.
Volunteer Opportunities
Students looking to gain hospital pharmacy experience are encouraged to consider applying to become a student volunteer with the Department of Pharmacy Services.
Employment Opportunities for Students
Mount Sinai Hospital hires up to eight summer students, who may also have the opportunity to work in the Department throughout the year.

Lisa Burry - Clinician Scientist & Clinical Pharmacy Specialist Mount Sinai Hospital & University of Toronto. Peer-review for multiple journals including CMAJ, Crit Care Med, Chest, Annals of Pharmacotherapy, and many others. Currently, chair of Emergency and Trauma Medicine Editorial Board, Annals of Pharmacotherapy. Research: Clinical preceptor to numerous BSc, MSc, Doctor of Pharmacy students and pharmacy residents each year. Research interest relate to patient & drug safety – in particular sedation, neuromuscular blockade, delirium and pain.
Chris Fan-Lun
Geriatric Medicine Pharmacist, Clinical Practice Leader - Department of Pharmacy Services, Mount Sinai Hospital
Adjunct Lecturer- Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto
Chris Fan-Lun is a pharmacist at Mount Sinai Hospital with the Geriatric Medicine Consulting Team and is a clinical practice leader in the Department of Pharmacy Services at Mount Sinai Hospital, Sinai Health System. After graduating from the University of Toronto’s Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, he went on to complete a hospital pharmacy residency at Mount Sinai Hospital and attained board certification as a Certified Geriatric Pharmacist (CGP). He has also worked as a pharmacist consultant and subject matter expert with Clinical Informatics and previously as a pharmacy manager in a community hospital.
Chris is an active educator, teaching students and clinicians on polypharmacy issues in older adults and how they can help improve their patient’s quality of life through medication management. He lectures at the University of Toronto, precepts pharmacy students and residents on clinical rotations, and leads teaching seminars for medical residents and clerks in their geriatric medicine rotation at Mount Sinai Hospital.
