The Centre provides the kind of learning environment necessary to develop core interprofessional education programs across the university and its affiliated teaching hospitals.

Collaborative work among health professionals is key to providing high quality patient-centred care. Interprofessional education enhances the development of skills at an earlier stage of professional development, and therefore provides a better foundation for future health-care team relationships, communication and collaborative care.

The Cooper Centre encompasses the already established Wightman-Berris Academy, which provides education for half of the medical students trained at the University of Toronto. It brings these students together with trainees in other health disciplines based at Mount Sinai Hospital for structured and unstructured, collegial encounters.

The Centre is used in many ways, from one-on-one interactions between students and patients, to small group discussions and seminar sessions, to interactive presentations with colleagues around the city and across the world. Students no longer learn only from direct contact with their teachers but also in a virtual manner.

In addition, all students have access to a state-of-the-art computer lab and wireless technologies for accessing the internet, electronic based educational health resources, current medical and scientific literature and teaching tools, complete learning projects, and communication with their tutors and peers.

Through seminar rooms equipped with computers, projectors, and teleconferencing equipment, the Centre helps students participate in a multitude of educational opportunities. It is a medical education hub, facilitating interactive learning, and enabling our staff and faculty to provide distance education to sites around the city and beyond.
