Interprofessional Education (IPE)
Interprofessional Education (IPE) Student Placement Goals
An IPE placement will provide the opportunity for students from various health care disciplines:
- To develop an increased understanding of the expertise that each discipline brings to the solution of health problems
- To develop an understanding of team dynamics, communication skills within the team, and conflict resolution within the context of a well-functioning team
- To learn and develop clinical expertise together
- To provide the opportunity for students from various health care disciplines to develop an increased understanding of the expertise that each discipline brings to the solution of health problems
- To allow for the provision of opportunities for students to learn and develop clinical expertise together
- To provide an opportunity to develop an understanding of team dynamics, communication skills within the team, and conflict resolution within the context of a well-functioning team
Expected student outcomes include the following:

- Increased knowledge and understanding of the roles, contributions and expertise of various team members in the delivery of health care services to patients / clients, e.g. similarities, differences and potential areas of role overlap and conflict
- Increased understanding and respect for the values, beliefs and attitudes that both differentiate the various health disciplines and appreciation of those that are common
- Increased knowledge and understanding of the importance of interprofessional collaboration in the delivery of health care, e.g. team building, team functioning, communication, conflict resolution
- Enhanced interprofessional collaborative competencies (attachment Appendix C Interprofessional Collaborative Competencies”) and skills in building interprofessional relationships and maximizing team function
