Project Title

Pan-Canadian best practices to engage seldom- or never-screened women in cancer screening

Source of Funding

Public Health Agency of Canada - $ 239,005.   2009 – 2010.

Description

Research indicates that in Canada (as elsewhere), women who are seldom or never screened for breast, cervical and colorectal cancers are at increased risk of poor outcomes for these diseases. Some groups of women are less likely to participate in cancer screening.  These women include: Newcomers to Canada, Elderly women, Low-income women, Disabled women, Women of low literacy or whose first language is not English and Aboriginal women.

Health agencies across Canada have been working with this population to increase awareness and participation in cancer screening. Many have created successful interventions, but they do not have the capacity or resources to publish or share their knowledge with other agencies in Canada. This project will collect information from agencies across Canada to identify the best practices in increasing breast, cervical and colorectal cancer awareness and screening participation for women who are seldom or never screened.

The goal of the project is to develop and publish a document outlining these strategies which have been effectively used in communities across Canada. It will be disseminated to organizations and Canadian agencies involved in cancer screening.  This project will also help expand and strengthen a national network so that agencies will learn from the successes of others and adopt best practices to increase cancer screening participation among marginalized women.
