Going Home with Your Baby

Our general practice is for patients to be discharged approximately 24 hours after an uncomplicated vaginal birth, and when the baby’s blood work is complete and the results are available.

Patients who had a caesarean birth are discharged between 24-48 hours. The exact time of your discharge will be coordinated with your health-care team as it is based on making sure you are medically ready to go home. Discharge teaching will be provided by your nurse to ensure you have adequate support and information to take your baby home.

Please ensure you have a health-care provider (doctor or mid-wife) to care for your newborn after going home. It is important that your newborn infant be assessed by your health-care provider within 48 hours after discharge from hospital, unless otherwise directed.
