For many patients and their families, English is not their first language. We want every patient to be confident that they understand the information their health-care team is giving them.

If you are more comfortable speaking another language while you are here to communicate with your health-care providers, we will arrange for an interpreter at no cost to you.

Using an interpreter will not affect your right to privacy and confidentiality. It will help you to make decisions about your own care based on the best possible information we can provide.

Sinai Health currently has interpreters for more than 65 languages, with Mandarin, Cantonese and Arabic being the most common.

We offer free interpretation services for patients who are deaf or hard of hearing. Please let your doctor, provider and/or admitting representative know about your communication needs, in advance if possible. If you need an interpreter while you are staying in the hospital, please talk to a staff member.

You can also contact Sinai Health Interpreter Services directly workdays between 8:00am to 4:00p.m. at 416-586-4800 ext. 2121 to make the arrangements (English speaking line only), or e-mail Interpreter Services at interpreter@sinaihealthsystem.ca .  There will be no charge for this service.

Please Note:

In emergency or short-notice situations, when an in-person interpreter is not immediately available for a specific language, we may utilize telephone and/or video remote interpretation. Sinai Health has invested in the latest communications technology in order to ensure that our patients and families with limited English proficiency always receive excellent care.

Our services include customized wireless conference phones and dual-handset phones stationed at key hospital departments with access to interpreters in 180 languages and dialects, 24hours a day, and 7 days a week. We offer video remote interpreting supported with a computer and webcam when assisting deaf patients through American Sign Language (ASL) to supplement in-person ASL Interpreters.
