Obstetrical Ultrasound

Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to create images of the inside of your body. Ultrasound images can show body parts, organs and blood flow. There is no radiation used in ultrasound.

Obstetric ultrasounds, also called prenatal or pregnancy ultrasounds, are used to examine a growing embryo or fetus. At Sinai Health, all obstetric ultrasounds are done at the Centre of Excellence in Obstetric Ultrasound (CEOU).

At CEOU, we offer the following ultrasounds:

  • Routine and complicated anatomy
  • Dating/viability
  • Limited (targeted exam)/transvaginal
  • Nuchal translucency (NT)
  • Biophysical profile (BPP)
  • Placental study

Your appointment

  • Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment. If you are late, your appointment may be rescheduled.
  • Bring a bag for your personal belongings during the exam.
  • If you are in the first trimester of your pregnancy, do not use the washroom to empty your bladder for one hour before the exam. You can eat and drink as you normally would. There is no preparation for second and third trimester ultrasounds.
  • The length of your appointment will depend on the type of pregnancy you have and the obstetric ultrasound you are having.
  • Most exams will take 30 minutes to 60 minutes. However, if you are pregnant with more than one fetus, the exam will take longer.
  • We do our best to stay on time. Unfortunately, your appointment may be delayed by unforeseen circumstances. We recommend that you come prepared for delays.
  • If you wish to have another doctor copied on the report, please let the receptionist know before your test.
  • Once the ultrasound is complete, the images will be reviewed by the on-site radiologist or fetal medicine specialist, and the results will be electronically forwarded to your health care provider within five business days. For some exams the fetal medicine specialist may review the report with you in a private setting at the end of your appointment.
  • If you’re interested, you will be able to buy a DVD of up to 5 images.
