Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Approximately 1,100 babies are admitted to our The Newton Glassman Charitable Foundation Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) each year.
Our combined care Level 2 and Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides care for babies after birth who need special attention and who continue to require specialized services. Some of the reasons include preterm birth, low birth weight, breathing difficulty, low blood sugar and infection.
Members of the NICU team also meet with some high risk mothers before the birth of their baby to discuss the care that their baby will need and what the family can expect after the baby is born. The NICU team participates in all births when it is expected that the baby may experience difficulties.
Our Approach
Family integrated care (FICare) is the philosophy that guides how we provide care for the infants in our NICU. Parents are encouraged to be active members of the team that take care of their infant while in our unit.. Research has shown that infants cared for under the FICare model grow faster and have less stress, spend fewer days in the NICU, and are less likely to be readmitted to hospital after discharge. Our nurses understand the unique medical needs of infants and can teach parents to understand how best to care for their babies. Learn more about Family Integrated Care.
