Creating Space for Arts and Humanities in the Education of Health Professionals:

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? A Canadian Perspective

This first annual Canadian conference on medical and health humanities is designed to take the pulse of our shared work and to bring together colleagues from multiple disciplines - the arts, social sciences and humanities, located in various settings (clinical, academic, artistic) - in order to share ideas, teaching/learning/evaluative strategies, and inquiry approaches - to further shape health professional education and health care in this country.

We are pleased to be linked with both the 2011 Canadian Conference on Medical Education (CCME) conference being held in Toronto, and the Wilson Centre-sponsored symposium “Social Science Perspectives on Health Professions Education” which is being held on Friday, May 6th at the University Health Network (Toronto General Hospital).  Their keynote speaker will be medical sociologist Arthur Frank PhD.

This conference is being organized by a small working group in the hope that it will take place on an annual basis in rotating sites across Canada. We hope that an ongoing conference meeting will provide a means of showcasing the innovative work that is being done throughout the country, and support networking and collaboration in this area.
