GP-Psychotherapy Fellowship

One position will be created for graduating family medicine residents or graduated practitioners with an active Ontario billing number, wishing to pursue a 1-year fellowship in psychotherapy at Mount Sinai Hospital.

The yearly position (starting July 1 of each year) will be full-time and consist of the following options:

  • individual psychotherapy (supportive, cognitive-behavioural and/or brief- psychodynamic) couple psychotherapy
  • family therapy
  • care and support of the chronic mentally ill
  • group therapy
  • psychotherapy with the medically ill
  • HIV psychiatry/psychotherapy
  • crisis/emergency room exposure
  • outpatient assessment clinics
  • family-medicine-psychiatry consult-liaison exposuer
  • psychopharmacology exposure and integration into psychotherapeutic care
  • exposure to research projects in progress in the Department of Psychiatry
  • involvement in behavioural medicine teaching of family medicine residents
  • interpersonal therapy
  • assessment/treatment of PTSD and trauma


Program Goals and Objectives

The Kenneth Citron Family Medicine Psychotherapy Fellowship will allow the fellow:

  1. To enhance time-limited psychotherapy skills in modalities appropriate to the family medicine setting and philosophy of care.
  2. To further develop rigorous skills in psychiatric assessment and care.
  3. To elucidate challenges inherent to the performing of psychotherapy in a primary care setting (i.e. boundary/frame delineations, integration of physical/psychological care).
  4. To develop a research question and project pertinent to the practise of family medicine psychotherapy.
  5. To enhance supervisory/teaching skills around psychotherapy with family medicine trainees and family physicians.
  6. The position will be self-funded through the trainee's OHIP billings. Supervision time and overhead for office space, secretarial, billing services will be deducted by the Department of Psychiatry.


Supervisors will be from the Departments of Psychiatry and Family Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital. Clinical supervision and feedback will be ongoing. Formal evaluation will take place twice during the year.

A diploma will be issued on successful completion of the year.
